About this blog
Digital identities are new technologies that make it easier and faster to prove who you are and things about you.
The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) is responsible for enabling the adoption of digital identity services across the UK economy.
For accessing public services via GOV.UK, the Government Digital Service is developing GOV.UK One Login. You can find out more about GOV.UK One Login on the GDS blog.
For proving your identity and accessing services in the wider economy – like when you start a new job or renting a flat – DSIT is making it possible to use digital identity services built in the private sector. We are ensuring that these services are safe, secure, and trustworthy by introducing clear standards, governance and oversight, underpinned by legislation.
Digital identities are not mandatory, and the government has no plans to introduce a mandatory national identity system or identity cards.
